Assertiveness For The Win: The Power of Assertive (Not Aggressive) Communication in the Workplace
IF YOU ARE UNASSERTIVE:
If you are unassertive (e.g. shy and meek) your lack of assertiveness in the workplace may be detrimental to your career growth--it can cost you recognition, raises and promotions--and it may also be detrimental to your immediate team, department or organization as a whole.
If you are unassertive and/or introverted, your ideas and potentially innovative solutions for the workplace might not be coming to the surface, or you might be reluctant to share them with immediate coworkers, cross-functional colleagues, or senior leadership. This often comes at the cost of innovation—pesky problems persist, you may suffer quietly, and your organization may suffer from a competitive disadvantage as a result. Unassertiveness may contribute to lower morale, interpersonal troubles, inefficiencies, and higher turnover/lower employee retention—in other words, it can have a real cost! Introversion is not a flaw. But assertive communication is a clear and purposeful communication skill that can be learned, no matter your personality type.
In this one-on-one coaching environment, all you have to do is show up. You'll learn the foundations, find ways to tailor assertive communication to your unique style, practice the techniques in a safe and non-judgmental space—then reconvene within 1 week to remember, reinforce and fortify your learnings.
IF YOU ARE TOO ASSERTIVE:
If you are an overly aggressive person and you rub co-workers the wrong way, and that doesn’t bother you, then this is not the workshop for you. This is intended for professionals who are aware that they are assertive to an excessive level (or during inappropriate situations) and wish to do something about it, by addressing this challenge head on.
Overly aggressive communication (think: driven sales personality type!) might occasionally help you win in the short term, but at what cost? Often at the cost of professional and personal relationships. Short term gains may jeopardize long term coworker or client partnerships, which puts you, your team and your organization at a competitive disadvantage—this can have real costs associated with it. Over-assertiveness may contribute to a toxic work environment, lower morale, inefficiencies, less collaboration, less innovation, and higher turnover/lower employee retention. You (or your colleagues) may suffer in private, and your organization may suffer from a competitive disadvantage as a result.
Toning down your aggression may feel impossible, but it can be learned.
In this one-on-one coaching environment, all you have to do is show up. You'll learn the foundations, find ways to tailor assertive yet non-aggressive communication to your unique style, practice the techniques in a safe and non-judgmental space—then reconvene within 1 week to remember, reinforce and fortify your learnings.
